Tribute to Steve Thrower
I first became acquainted with Steve back in the 1990’s when he joined Hull D, the team I captained. Over the next 25 years Steve played in almost every match for Hull D, while at the same time I myself played under Steve’s captaincy for Hull X. I always enjoyed having Steve in my team because I knew he would give 100%. He never let me down and even when he lost, he would still remain cheerful.
More recently I met up with Steve and John Jackson, another long-serving member of Hull D and Hull X, for weekly visits to the Floral Hall in Hornsea. We would chat about anything and everything though politics and chess were invariably on the agenda. Something which I often found quite amusing was Steve’s chess terminology. I don’t know which chess books he read but I remember on one occasion when he had lost a game, Steve said his defeat resulted from his having “crippled pawns”!
Towards the end of last year Steve booked his fateful cruise to Tenerife. I remember his comment at the time, “Well you never know what’s round the corner”.
Alas, his words turned out to be so prophetic. He will be greatly missed.
Rest in peace, Steve.
